After an enjoyable family Christmas (with a lot of feasting!) and a mellow New Years Eve with Mr House Beauty, I am back to work and ready to create my own beautiful year. Are you?
You may be thinking the usual...lose weight (why?), stop drinking (yeah right)...but I have found over the last few years that creating a solid daily routine has made a difference in helping me achieve my goals throughout the year.
So how do I know this?
Whilst I have always been an advocate of self care and was leading quite a hedonistic lifestyle previously... 2017 was a difficult year for me. I suffered from depression and extreme anxiety. I began Cognitive Behavioural Therapy which initially I found really tough to push myself, but it was integral part of keeping me going.
Through the CBT sessions over the year, my therapist helped me realise that my self-care regime had gone out of the window while all these other problems were swirling around in my head.
This is where I was going wrong!
So we made a schedule and added, at first, 2 or 3 self-care activities a week. When life gets tough, you often feel like you need to hide in a world of your own and sometimes it's hard just to get out of bed or to do anything except work ourselves into the ground. That's the part we need to fight. By keeping a diary with reasons to get up in the morning (self care routines) my life felt lighter. I now complete a self care activity everyday, sometimes 2 or 3..or more!
I'm not saying, wow I have a cure for depression. I am not a doctor. I just hope that maybe...just maybe...this might help you a little along your way.
Sounds outrageous doesn't it? But I have kids, but I have to care for someone, but I have to work all night, but I have books to mark, but I have to help everyone else...but but but but but. Stop talking about butts! Or at least just talk about your own butt. Haha! The list goes on. You need to stop and think about YOU. That isn't to say, forget about everyone else. So think about this...how on earth can you be expected to help anyone else when you are run down, tired or stressed? You can't. You cannot serve from an empty vessel my dearest. So there is your answer. You have to be first.
So you've decided to be your own priority. Well done! That is a big step in and of itself. Now you need to get time on your side. Life is so much easier when you have a diary (paper is always best but phone calendar is fine too). Plan ahead.
To start with, we need to plan your self care around all those commitments you already have. (If you have a completely clear diary for the year at this point, skip to Step Two).
Start by adding those boring things like birthdays, anniversaries. Those important events you have heard about in advance so you are prepared for them. Remembering at the last minute just adds more stress to your life. Add your work times or important meetings in there. Add your child's activities in there that are already planned (any pick ups and parties).
A) Think about your favourite things to do. Buying a new lipstick or skincare product. Visiting me for to have a Luxury Facial and Massage, getting your eyebrows done...painting, crafting, walking, having a pedicure, having a bath, using a bath bomb, reading in the bath. Write these down in the front of your diary to have as your go-to self care list.
B) But what if you don't have any favourite activities or enjoy anything at the moment? It sounds sad but sometimes you need to learn what is good for you. This was something my therapist said and it really hit home and made me realise that I wasn't doing ANYTHING anymore. No wonder I was depressed. Think about things you USED to enjoy. Think about things you used to WANT to do. Start with those, the rest will follow. If you are still struggling, use my list above as a starting point.
You can do it.
Keep it easy.
Plan to keep it achievable.
Maybe plan one for next week so you can look forward to it?
The next week you could easily do two.
When you visit me for a treatment I always advise how often you need to keep it maintained, eg 6 weekly appointments for a facial or 4 weekly brow top ups.
'Make an appointment with yourself and don't stand yourself up.'
Before you know it you will have joined hundreds of my clients, who plan their treatments a month or two (sometimes three!) in advance.
You will know when you have an event coming up, so you can work backwards and know you need to book your spray tan a couple days before and find an outfit and accessories the month before. Now you have this skill you will morph into a Super Organised, De-Stressed, Energetic version of yourself!
I hope you found this blog useful!
If you need more help just ask, I love talking about self care so will be thrilled to discuss ways to help you during your appointment. Just remember to bring your diary!
