Firstly, Why Should I Wax?
Waxing reduces ingrown hairs, bumps and eradicates razor burn, unlike shaving and leaves you feeling fresh, exfoliated and smooth.
What Should I Wax?
The most popular areas to be waxed are: Bikini Area, Legs, Underarms and Brows. Run of the mill brow waxes however, have been replaced by Celebrity Brows, which involve as little hair removal as possible and encourages growth to give fuller, thicker and bolder brows (bang on trend!).
Do I need to grow my hair?
Waxing Jargon Busted
Extended Bikini - Modern Style Bikini Wax. Hair is removed around the outside of the bikini and is brought in further past the crease of the leg until you are left with a strip all the way down. Hair is also taken from the top, as low as you would like and as wide as you would like (usually 3cm is a good width). You may also have a cute little snail trail towards the belly button, which most women do, so let your therapist know if you would like this removed too. Please don't be embarrassed because it is very common and what we are here for!
Half Leg - Lower Leg Includes toes, calves and knees. It's not often the upper leg is asked for, though it would be the knees, thighs and any hair in the crease under the bottom cheek.
Underarms - This is a saviour for those with thick, dark, coarse armpit hair. Experience an extreme reduction in density and darkness after 3 treatments, leaving you with smooth skin and fair, fine regrowth. After your first few treatments you won't even need to cover up and hide under t-shirts because the regrowth will go undetected.
How Often do I need to Wax?
Why is this?
Anagen: The Growth Stage new hair is produced. Approx 80% of hair will be in this stage at a time, which makes it the perfect time to wax.
Catagen: Falling Out Stage Hair grows upward and detaches from the bulb and is then cut off from the blood supply. This is why hair in this stage looks dull and unhealthy. Only 2-5% of hair is in this stage at one time.
Telogen: The Final or Resting Stage Hair at fullest size, completely up in follicle, allowing hair to show above surface. More likely to shed or fallout. Only 15-17% of hair will be in this stage at one time.
It can take anywhere from 4 to 13 weeks for the hair to grow from the dermal papilla (the base of the hair follicle) to the surface of the skin.
Have you ever felt a little leftover stubble after getting waxed?
You will notice that after your first few waxes, you will have some regrowth following, as your body is reacting to waxing by resetting the anagen (active) phase of dormant papilla cells. These hairs appearing are those that were in the early Anagen Stage and were not long enough (or above skin) to be removed. With regular waxing every 3 to 4 weeks, you are more than likely to get your hair on the same growing cycle, allowing for optimal waxing results.
Hair grows in the above 3 stages and it can take up to 4 waxing treatments before all of the hair is on the same growth cycle, so they all come out together. Your first wax likely won't remove all the hair, it may last only one week, it may last up to three – it just depends on your own genetics, how recently and often you’ve shaved, and how well you do at preparing the skin before the wax and taking care of the skin between your treatments.
Does it hurt?
This is why I insist that you book a course of 3 appointments if you are a first timer, before I start waxing you. If you have booked it, then you have less chance of convincing yourself out of it and I am here to help you. I really don't recommend just going for one if you have no intention of continuing with it - you have to be committed to achieve results; so you need to get friendly with your diary.
First Bikini: If you are having you first bikini wax, you may want to stick with a traditional rather than extended to get used to it, unless you're hardcore and think you can handle it. No need to feel embarrassed, and please don't 'tidy up' beforehand by shaving! It defeats the point. We need to see everything. You will really make the experience much more pleasant (for yourself and the technician) if you trim beforehand. Most technicians don't do this for you, because to be honest, who nobody wants someone going at their foof with scissors. We need to be able to see what hairs we are waxing and if they are longer than half a centimetre, it gets tricky and you will just have to grin and bear it. I always take my time to ensure I cause as little discomfort as possible but when I can't see what I am doing, it will be hurting way more than it could be and I won't be able to do as good a job.
First Underarms: Underarm Waxing is the best beauty discovery I ever made, thanks to my client Cath (seriously, thank you!!). I love nothing more than having smooth underarm skin and fair little hairs that nobody can see when I'm growing them out in my little vest top!!
You must be super committed to your first 3 underarm waxes & bikini waxes. Space them around 3 weeks apart (you know, because underarm regrowth at first is not a pretty sight the first few times because its so coarse!!). The first time you will be pretty sore afterwards because these hairs have been in there for so long. They are rooted and they don't enjoy being pulled out. Expect to be pretty red and uncomfortable for a couple days. You will likely experience regrowth pretty quickly in time for your 2nd wax. The second time, its still pretty uncomfortable but half as much so as the first. Hair growth still comes back fairly quickly. But lucky number 3, oh how we love you!! By wax 3, your underarm hair will be finer, regrowth slower and you can start wearing vests and tank tops again. After that, it's plain sailing and the pain is pretty non-existent.
First Legs: Uncomfortable and stingy but not brutal. After a few you won't really think about it, just lay back and relax.
What Should I Wear?
- Comfortable, loose clothes - no jeans or leggings.
- Old pants you don't mind getting wax residue on when you get dressed after..no thongs or they will rub. You may even want to go commando after.
- A vest for underarm waxing (or remove your top)
